DWELLING under the ‘ETERNAL WINGS’ of GOD!
"He who dwells in the secret place of
the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the
Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.' Surely He
shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous
pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall
take refuge." (Psalms 91:1-4)
If there is
one word to describe Psalms 91, that word is: security. There are two distinct voices in this psalm, and each of
these voices speaks to us as we trust in God for our security. The first voice
assures us of God’s constant protection (vv. 1–13). The second voice is that of
God Himself who promises to guard and watch over us (vv. 14–16).
God
preserves those who abide in Him and love Him. In the face of the hard
realities of life, God is portrayed as a compassionate mother bird protecting
her young (v. 4). This is a great promise of blessing to us who trust in God. However,
to enjoy this protection we should be willing to make our abode in the secret place of God. They imply a
constant and continuous dwelling and not just a temporary visitation during
trouble or calamity. These promises are not for people who run to the Lord only
in times of danger but for those who dwell in His presence (v. 1) and make the
Holy of Holies their habitation (v. 9). Psalm
91 is a promise to those who take up residence in the secret place of God!
This secret
place can be interpreted as the place just above the mercy seat in God in the
tabernacle. Based on Romans 3:25, Jesus Christ is our mercy seat, so our secret
place is the very throne room of God. We can enter this place through prayer in
the name of Jesus and by the redeeming blood of Christ. Our abiding life (vv. 1–4) in Christ produces
the assuring life (vv. 5–13), the
life without fear, which leads to the abounding
life (vv. 14–16), the life of victory and peace. The safest place in the world is under the shadow of the Almighty when
we rest under the eternal wings of God!
There are seven blessings when we dwell under the
eternal wings of God, as these wings will be our place of refuge (Psalms 36:7; 57:1; 61:4), our place of trust (Ruth 2:12; Jer. 17:7), our place of joy (Psalms 63:7), our
place to hide us (Psalms 17:8; Jer. 36:26), our place of support (Exodus 19:4; Deut. 32:11), our place of healing (Mal. 4:2) and our place to bring everyone together
(Matt. 23:37). Let us hide and take refuge under the eternal wings of
God today!
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Heb 4:16)
