SETTING up the RIGHT PRIORITIES for our LIVES
“Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall
we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these
things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all
these things. But seek first the kingdom
of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own
things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matt 6:31-34)
Through the
above passage, our Lord Jesus Christ is teaching us that we should set up the
right priorities in our lives by ‘putting
first things first’. We should not spend our lives in anxious pursuit of
food, drink, and clothing for the future. The world around us is scrambling
madly to accumulate material things, and living as if food and clothing were everything
to pursue in life.
As God’s
children, we need to understand that we have a heavenly Father who knows our
daily needs. Our God makes the following covenant with us: “If you will put MY interests first in your life, I will guarantee your
future needs. If you seek first MY kingdom and MY righteousness, then I will
see that you NEVER lack the necessities of life.” This is God’s “Social Security” program for us!
Our responsibility
is to live for God, trusting Him for our future with unshakable confidence that
He will provide everything that we need. We are called to live one day at a
time by focusing only on what is in front of us. We need to simplify our lives,
and not worry by being overwhelmed with the life’s demands. Worry does not
accomplish anything positive but instead makes us miserable with our troubles.
We must take things as they come – one
day at a time – and trust God for the wisdom to respond properly in every
situation.
Let us make God’s sovereign rule and
a right relationship with Him, the highest priority in our lives. Worry is inconsistent with this
priority; it doubts the sovereignty or goodness of God and distracts us from
the true goals of life. God will meet all our needs when we risk all in Him. Let’s
aim for total stewardship so that God is in complete control of our lives, and
our one desire is to glorify Him alone every day. This is the secret of living an abundant life free of worries!
"In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul." (Psalms 94:19)
